A bit of positive fear

God is amazing!
He is loving, full of grace and forgiveness
He gives us rest and a brand new life

So why should we fear Him?

We don't get many sermons these days on the fear of God. I don't mean in a fire and brimstone kind of way, but there are so many places in the Bible that talk about the fear of God. Recently I have been looking at fear in the Psalms and especially at 'those who fear God'.

So Why should we fear God?

Those who fear God....

Will be blessed
(Psalm 112:1, 115:13,128:4)
Will prosper (Psalm 25:12)
God will talk to (Psalm 25:14)
Lack nothing (Psalm 34:9)
Are provided for (Psalm 61:5)
God listens to (Psalm 66:16)
Have peace (Psalm 85:9)
He will love (Psalm 103:11)
Praise Him (Psalm 135:20)
God delights in (Psalm 145:11)

There are many more but you get the idea. The fear of God is not the same as the way we fear people or failure or heights. It is a fear that leads us to please Him and in turn He is pleased with us. It is a fear that means that we walk the way that He wants us to walk and He pours out the blessing that He wants to give us.

So why should we fear God?

He wants us to love Him more than anything else and seek Him first. He knows how best to steady our steps and He wants to bless us.

  1. How amazing! I've been mulling this over the last few days; the difference between fear (I'm frightened, I want to hide) and fear (awe, reverence, the kind that makes you fall on your face but fill with joy all at once).
Thankyou for this. May he 'steady my steps' indeed.
